In a recent blog, we shared how workplace cleanliness can improve your productivity. It may sound easy to most, but if staying tidy does not come naturally to you then the thought of cleaning up your work area can seem overwhelming.
To help we are sharing a few simple tips to guide you through tidying up your office:
- Start small: By tackling smaller projects first, you are able to gradually work yourself to larger tasks. Start by cleaning up smaller areas around your desk like your inbox. Work your way up to your desk drawers, the pile of papers on top of your desk, and eventually your filing cabinets. If you also save files electronically, also make time to clean up the documents on your computer.
- It you don’t need it, toss it: Don’t let unneeded items or documents clutter up your area. If you have not looked at or used something in over a year, chances are you don’t need to hang onto it. As you’re tidying up, separate your belongings into two piles: keep and trash. Anything in your keep pile goes into your files and everything else should be discarded. You’ll be amazed at how much room you have after this! (always be sure to check with your employer about properly discarding any confidential materials)
- Get organized for the future: Now that you have cleaned up your workspace, create an organization plan that allows you to maintain your newly tidy office. Create physical or virtual file folders that you can organize your documents into each day, add drawer organizers in your desk, and invest in a shredder so you can easily dispose of unnecessary documents instead of letting them pile up!
Following these three simple tips over time will allow you to spend more time being productive at work and less looking for buried items. You will be surprised at the difference a clean space can have on your productivity!
